We are getting invited to more and more "potlucks" lately. I was just wondering how you all felt about them?

Here’s my beef with them. I understand the need for a potluck with a 4th of July cookout and co-worker birthdays, etc. But I’ve been invited to these potlucks: kid and adult birthday parties, baptisms (parents didn’t even supply the cake!), Thanksgiving (we were asked to bring the cooked turkey) and wedding receptions (with a list of where the bridal party was registered too!).

I was raised to host your own party, if you couldn’t afford what you wanted a) simplify or b) don’t do it.

Also, what do you do when you have to leave the party? Take your platter with the food or leave the food with the host in another container? What if your food/drink hasn’t been used?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Me and my fiance decided to have a cupcake tier and a mini. cake on the top. The thing is we are making it ourselves. The baking part will be easy but decorating is another thing. I want to have flowers or maybe butterflies. Especially since the place we are getting married is famous of monarch butterflies. We have thought much about the decoration of the cake and cupcakes. But I have no idea where to start. I know it would be hard to do, but I want it to look somewhat professional. Any one knows a website that shows how to make fancy looking flowers or any kind of fancy cake/cupcake decorations?? Or maybe can just explain how to do the fancy looking decorating?

I want to order square wedding cakes and purchase a cake stand to put them on. Will the cascading ones from Michaels hold up these square cakes?

Seems like a cute idea.

Like how much you should spend on each part? Total budget (not including dress/tux) is around ,000 and we will have around 75-100 people. We are looking at a venue that is ,500 and includes the food, DJ, flowers, bar service (but no alcohol, we supply our own), and cake. Can we get the other things we need and still be around k (photographer, alcohol, favors…what else am I missing?) or do we need to choose a cheaper venue? It is a castle and really unique, so there really isnt an alternate venue that would be similar, but I would consider other types of places.
this budget is not including attire, rings, honeymoon, bridal party gifts we are paying for these items ourselves, may parents are giving us the k

my fiance and I are thinking of of a theme for our wedding..
these are just "ideas", nothing concrete yet.
how can we merge our two cultures in the wedding, seeing as we don’t want one culture to dominate the other(in theme and decorations), in front of our family and friends.
my fiance and I are very much deeply rooted in our cultures.
We’re Egyptian and Mexican.
any theme suggestions?? decorations???
Thanks for your input.

Hi everyone I am getting married june 2010, I was wondering will it be better to cater food for at least 60-80 people or will it be easier to cater my own wedding. My FH and I are at war LOL with this issue. Catering can be expensive. But will people really put the time and effort into making food for our wedding. And is it tacky to ask people to make a dish for our wedding. We would like our guest to enjoy a day of relaxation and have fun, not have to woory about a week or so to do the preparing. And how early will I have to prepare food to cook for all of my guest. Here is my list and let me know what you think, any suggestions will be appreciated.

I don’t want to make a 7 tier cake or anything like that, my boss wants a white wedding cake for his birthday, and I don’t have a recipe

We are making a strawberry short cake as our wedding cake. How do you make cool whip icing? and any good recipes for the cake?
